Assignment Details

Our Client, a Leading Global Specialist in Energy Management and Automation, is seeking an experienced IoT Architecture Consultant to conduct a short-term (2-3 weeks), full-time onsite engagement focused on a comprehensive evaluation of an existing cloud-connected smart home IoT platform. The objective is to assess the current system architecture and codebase, identify performance and reliability issues, and provide actionable recommendations for improvement and modernization.

The consultant will perform an end-to-end technical assessment of an IoT-based smart home platform built on Microsoft Azure. The focus will be on identifying architectural gaps, code inefficiencies, scalability constraints, and reliability issues impacting system performance and user experience.

Mobile: iOS (Swift), Android (Kotlin)
Databases: MySQL, Azure Cosmos DB, Redis
Architecture: Monolithic with Azure IoT integrations


Key Responsibilities

1. Architecture Assessment
Review end-to-end system architecture and design
Evaluate scalability, resilience, and cloud architecture (Azure)
Identify modernization opportunities and architectural improvements

2. Code & API Evaluation
Assess backend and frontend code quality
Review API design, performance, and error handling practices
Evaluate resilience and maintainability of application components

3. IoT Layer Analysis
Review device onboarding and provisioning workflows
Analyze IoT Hub integration, telemetry flow, and messaging reliability
Identify root causes of device status inconsistencies and synchronization issues

4. Data Layer Review
Evaluate database design and data consistency mechanisms
Assess real-time vs batch processing approaches
Review caching strategies and data pipeline efficiency

5. Performance & Reliability Analysis
Conduct end-to-end performance and load analysis
Identify system bottlenecks and intermittent failure points (~15-minute cycle issues)
Provide root cause analysis and remediation recommendations

6. Security Review
Evaluate authentication mechanisms (OAuth2, JWT)
Review API security and data protection controls

7. DevOps & Observability
Assess monitoring, logging, and alerting frameworks
Review CI/CD maturity and deployment practices
Evaluate incident detection and operational visibility

Updated architecture diagrams and improvement recommendations

Skills Required

Strong hands-on experience in IoT architecture and large-scale distributed systems
Proven expertise in designing and reviewing scalable IoT platforms
Deep understanding of Azure IoT services and cloud-native architectures
Strong knowledge of Node.js, Angular, and mobile integration ecosystems
Experience with system performance tuning, reliability engineering, and architecture modernization
Knowledge of smart home / home automation systems is an added advantage
